Remember those first couple days of the Harvey Weinstein controversy when he made it seem like he *may* have been inappropriate with some females but was seeking help with his wife, Georgina Chapman, by his side. He seemed to humble and contrite until, of course, it exploded into an absolute frenzy of allegations that range from unsavory propositions to actual rape.
Yesterday, Ben Affleck decided to address the situation by making the following statement:
I am saddened and angry that a man who I worked with used his position of power to intimidate, sexually harass and manipulate many women over decades. The additional allegations of assault that I read this morning made me sick. This is completely unacceptable, and I find myself asking what I can do to make sure this doesn’t happen to others. We need to do better at protecting our sisters, friends, co-workers and daughters. We must support those who come forward, condemn this type of behavior when we see it and help ensure there are more women in positions of power.
Not bad, right?
Wellllll, the good feelings didn’t last too long before some of Affleck’s own possible secrets came out of the woodwork. Take, for instance, the time he appeared on MTV’s TRL when Hilarie Burton, then just 19, was hosting. She claims that he tweaked her left breast after putting his arms around her suddenly.
A Twitter user brought it up saying, “He also grabbed Hilarie Burton’s breasts on TRL once. Everyone forgot though.” Burton, who is now 35, replied, “I didn’t forget” prompting the fan to say, “I’m so sorry that happened to you. It’s infuriating that people never bring up all the gross, predatory things he’s done.”
“Seriously, thank you for that. I was a kid,” Burton said before adding, “Girls. I’m so impressed with you brave ones. I had to laugh back then so I wouldn’t cry. Sending love.” The actress is currently expecting her second child with The Walking Dead star, Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
This isn’t the end of Affleck’s troubles, though. Far from it. Rose McGowan came out guns blazing after she saw his statement on Twitter and initially simply tweeted “Ben Affleck f- off.” During the investigation into this scandal, The New York Times uncovered the fact that McGowan had received a $100,000 settlement involving the movie mogul when she was 23, after an ”episode in a hotel room at the Sundance Film Festival.”
Right after her alleged assault, she had to go straight to a press conference where she told Affleck about what just happened. His reaction (according to her)? “Goddamnit! I told him to stop doing that.” After reiterating that Affleck said to her face, she added “You lie.”
In a follow-up statement, she confirmed that her tweet was “asserting that Mr. Affleck knew about Mr. Weinstein’s mistreatment of her because she had told him, and that she was accusing Mr. Affleck of lying because his statement did not acknowledge awareness of Mr. Weinstein’s behavior.”
Considering the fact that his marriage to Jennifer Garner ended under the worst of terms with him being accused of cheating and womanizing as well as the fact that his brother, Casey Affleck, has been accused of sexual harassment (and his wife has now filed for divorce), this doesn’t bode well.
The plot thickens!
